Applesauce is a great way to make desserts (or any baked item) a little healthier. The basic rule of thumb for substitution with applesauce is as follows:
- When substituting for butter: use about 1/4 cup of applesauce for every 1 cup of butter the recipe calls for. The applesauce changes the consistency of the item ever so slightly (it’s more cake-y), so it’s recommended you use mostly butter.
- When substituting for oil: applesauce can be substituted for oil on a 1:1 ratio, meaning that for every 1 cup of oil the recipe calls for, 1 cup of applesauce can be substituted.
